About Lars Teeney:
After going to an art school in San Francisco, racking up insane student loans and working for years as a freelance designer for the start-up culture, I became burnt out. I abandoned the Bay Area for the Pacific North-west, where I could hike and bike to my heart’s content.
Although the idea for the book had been swimming around in my head and on random notebooks for 10 years, it wasn’t until my mother got sick that I received a memento mori that put I fire under my sack to write The Apostates.
What inspires you to write?
When I first conceptualized the story ten years ago it was 9/11 and blind patriotism, but then the story languished for a decade. Later it was inspired by G.R.R.M and the SOIAF, also by climate change, the Tea Party and ISIS.
Tell us about your writing process.
I fill notebook upon notebook of mental vomit, then I sift through it and pare it down. I also sketch characters; as in how they physically look like.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Many aspects of my characters are based upon a certain aspect of my own personality that I find annoying or that I find beneficial. So it’s like I am writing about myself.
What advice would you give other writers?
Life is too short to languish in a job you hate or to procrastinate on your dreams; if you have some means to produce a novel use it, even if you have “to go without” for a spell.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My mother got sick, and I spent 3 months driving her around to her appointments. It was a memento mori that I was aging and I would need to leave my legacy behind in printed words.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
All media is in flux right now, but I think the printed book will be the realm of the luddite.
