About Kurt Robinson:
I am a graduate of the University of Kentucky where I wrote several short stories for my classes. I guess you could say it carried on. I wrote my first novel the summer after I graduated and eventually decided to self-publish it. My love for stories comes from watching movies since I was a little boy, reading novels came much later. I studied History at UK and will write Historical Fiction as well, but will also write stories in many genres. I am a native of Kentucky, I love football and basketball, movies, history, novels, and country music.
What inspires you to write?
Several things inspire me to write my stories, with my first novel it was events that actually happened to me, but I added much more to it. Several of my stories come from dreams that I have, I simply wake up and write them down. Other ideas come from something that just pops into my head during the day. As for my historical fiction stories, they come to me when I realize that I am very fond of the story and believe I can bring it to life.
Tell us about your writing process.
Depends on the story sometimes. My first novel I just sat down and started writing and let the story tell itself. But, my second novel is historical fiction, so I made an outline for it. Whichever way will work best is the way I will go.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I do actually. I want to know how they feel about something, what they think, what they would say during a key part of the story. I listen to what they have to say and if I don’t feel it is what they would say, or do, the scene will get rewritten. Character development is very important to me and a good way to do that is to get to know your characters as much as possible.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Well, I sent out my first novel to countless agents, and it got turned down. Then I heard about Amazon Kindle from a friend, so I looked into it. I found out that that was what a lot of authors were doing these days. It’s easy to do and it can get your name out there. Several authors are very successful from self-publishing on Amazon Kindle. But, I would definitely encourage fellow authors to explore the all processes to getting published.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it has great promise with both big publishing companies and self-publishing. But, I do see self-publishing becoming more popular in the future because the author can do and write what they want.
