About Kirstin Pulioff:
Kirstin Pulioff is a storyteller at heart. Born and raised in Southern California, she moved to the Pacific Northwest to follow her dreams and graduated from Oregon State University (Go Beavs!) with a degree in Forest Management. Happily married and a mother of two, she lives in the foothills of Colorado. When she’s not writing an adventure, she’s busy living one.
What inspires you to write?
I dream big, wish on stars, search for rainbows, find treasure in everyday blessings, and live life to its fullest… I am inspired by the world around me and the stories my muse tells me.
I write both fantasy and science fiction for middle grade and young adult.
Tell us about your writing process.
If you saw my desk, you wouldn’t need to ask this question 😉
I am a planner. Before I sit down to write the first draft of a story, I outline the entire book, chapter by chapter. I have an idea of the characters, plot twists, and actions sequences before I get started so that I make sure no plot holes are missed… that being said, everything is subject to changing as I write, and the final copy almost never looks like the first outline.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Are you saying they’re not real?
Yes. The characters talk to me and show me what they want to happen or argue with what I have planned. Often my intentions for a character change the more I get to know them throughout the writing process.
What advice would you give other writers?
Never give up… you’re the only one who can live your dreams, so keep pursuing them. Writing and publishing is a long process so don’t lose the momentum.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My books have been both independently published and published by an independent press.
I started my career with a small press, learning the inside scoop on marketing, promoting, and general publishing information. After that, I went the independent route, self-publishing my titles.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that people will always have a desire to read, and discover new books. Whether e-book or print, books will always be in demand, and new authors discovered.
