About K.D. Martel:
K.D. Martel was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, but has lived all her life in the Eastern Townships of the beautiful French province of Québec.
Artist by nature, she has worked in several mediums over the past years and specializes in working glass and creating jewelry. She has published several online short stories and has written numerous short articles. Guardians of the Crystals is her first published work. She focuses her fiction based writing on the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the Earth since her passion has always been ancient pre-history! Getting the message across to her readers that there have been many highly advanced civilizations living in the past on Earth is what drives her to create her novels and their characters.
What inspires you to write?
For the past twenty years I have studied ancient technologies, civilizations and peoples. I have always been fascinated by ancient civilizations following the last ice age and the enormous feats of engineering used to create their temples, megaliths and monoliths. No one today can explain how it was done and what technology was used because we haven’t attained that high level of engineering today in our own society. Over the past few years I mulled over a way to create a fantastic world upon Earth following the last ice age where our ancestors lived in a highly advanced “Golden Age” creating characters that can relate to us all in a civilization similar to ours, but maybe a bit more advanced. I wanted to blend adventure, action, ancient history with a bit of science fiction / fantasy blend with realistic characters we can all relate to and hopefully, fall in love with. This is my way of recreating a “what if?” ancient history.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is not the run of the mill operation. I start off with a rough outline, very rough; where I create my characters around a central plot. I’ll start off writing like a maniac, for hours on end in the wee hours of the night. This can go on blissfully for days until I hit a snag in the plot that I know must turn out a certain way, but how will I make it work. Then I have to put the work aside and think about it for days on end, more than often enough, a dream, something on TV, a song, will trigger the creative process and suddenly everything is clear, I see how to continue with the storyline. What is important, throughout my writing, I keep a timeline to make sure everything lines up with what my characters do and say, often over a period of time, months, years. Key events are on my timeline, plotted as I write the story, I jot them down in my workbook and constantly refer back to my notes. Working on a sequel, I always keep my timeline close along with the physical copy of the first book to make sure that I am following the sequence of events and characters in a logical way.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I often daydream when not writing or working on my art. In these quiet moments of meditation, I will interact with my characters, placing myself in their shoes and lives to make the outcome when written down on paper, as realistic as possible. I want my readers to feel my characters, to make them a part of their suspension of disbelief worlds!
What advice would you give other writers?
Write about what makes you passionate. Write about what makes your heart beat fast when actually writing! Write to get your ideas across, make people “feel” your writing, create scenes that even for non visual people, will help them relate to the book and your characters’ personalities.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I did a lot of research and being an Indie author was the best way to go for me. It was more economical for me and yes, it is very hard work getting your book out there. Eventually I would love to get partner with a publishing house, it is my goal, but for now, Indie is the most economical way for me to go. New authors should research all the options and go with what suits them best.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It is a great way for us Indie authors to get our written word out there! It is the future and many talented writers who may have not had a chance to shine in the regular publishing world can do now.
