About Jori Aguilar Sams:
Hello! I'm Jori. I'm the face behind Writeious Books. Over the past twenty years, I’ve lived in five countries. This has given me palette full of color, and offered me plenty of material to write about. I've been a freelance journalist for years, too, where I've penned over 1500 pieces for Yahoo alone. I've even received honors for my work.
In university, I studied medicine but it left me feeling empty-handed, so instead of reading medical books, I began concentrating on writing. Since then I've penned over twenty books of all genre and started my author website, Writeious Books where I aim to inspire the readers and leave them food for thought!
Create. Inspire. Repeat.
What inspires you to write?
Reading a well-written book that brings me into the story inspires me to write. Watching a clever or engaging memoir about an author inspires me to write. Listening to a beautiful song inspires me to write. Touring vast open and wild spaces sets me into author-mode. So does sitting in the midst of a historical setting like an old Roman ruin that carries me back in time where I sit and imagine what life must have been like then.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
After reading War and Peace, I really wanted to leave a bit of myself behind as Tolstoy did. For this reason, for the way he inspired me as a young author, he's one of my favorites. So is Dickens because of the way he connected with the working class and Austen for what she means to women authors.
Tell us about your writing process.
I think real authors never rest. Something as simple as a name, a place, a song, an idea, a sentence, a look in someone's eye can strike the author and get the wheels spinning. I try not to force anything. If I have a well-developed plot, I begin sketching it out and doing research. If ideas and beginnings come to me, I write them down. The most important thing is being disciplined and writing, even when not in the mood so that I can sometimes be in the zone and perform well. I'm not an outliner for the most part. I start with a character idea and let the characters create themselves.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I get a really good idea of my characters before they start talking, so they can talk to me. I picture them as I'm writing as if they're in the room with me. I listen to them more than I talk to them.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing. Even when you're not inspired. And learn to write well. Persevere. Write about what you know.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Over the years I've received publishing offers, but none of them were any good. So I've held on and gone the self-publishing route. I don't force anything, but I am determined. I'm looking for the open door. It's important to know what you want to accomplish as a writer before you publish. It's a long journey of self-promotion and building fans and a support base.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think traditional publishing will never recover. When the younger generation becomes the next generation, everything will be digital. Until then, the next generation loves to hold a book when they read. But Amazon has changed the face of publishing forever. The down side of that is that the quality of books has dropped significantly.
What genres do you write?: Literary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Travel Fiction, Children's Fiction, Memoir, Christian Non-fiction
