About Jordan Creed:
I was born in Ontario, Canada. As a boy, my singular passion was for stories. In time, this passion grew into a dedication to writing. Through high school, I wrote daily until my first novel, The Breacher, was completed at eighteen years old. With my nineteenth birthday and the release of my second work, The Breacher: Revenant, my eagerness to tell more stories grows.
What inspires you to write?
What inspires me to write is fear. See, as a writer, I find myself at the mercy of seemingly countless stories. I feel a dedication, a loyalty to each, as if I have a personal duty to set them in writing. The fear of letting these stories wither away in the back of my mind forces me again and again in front of the keyboard.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process begins with a very slow and thorough planning phase. In it, I write a brief sentence for each of the three acts in my story, then I write a sentence for every chapter within the story, followed by a paragraph for each chapter, and finally a lengthy "manual" for writing each individual scene. Almost half of the writing process can be spent before I even write a single word of the first draft. While this can be a rigid, constricting way to write, it also prevents inconsistencies within the story, major edits, and the dreaded writer's block.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don't communicate with my characters in the usual sense. Instead, I prefer a sort of exploration into their minds. I imagine myself as this character, dream of how their backstories would influence my actions, experience the specific signature on their thoughts and emotions, and attempt to understand more fully their perspective on other characters and the story as a whole.
What advice would you give other writers?
The best advice I can give is this: Write! When I first started work on The Breacher, I forced myself to sit down and write for an hour a day – just one hour. While that might not seem like all that long, it adds up when it becomes a daily practice. In time, I added more and more hours to my routine until I was seated in front of a keyboard for most of the day. Writing routinely forced me to plow through any difficulties I encountered, which led me to learn how best to overcome and avoid them. Just like any other skill, dedication yields results.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I chose to self-publish The Breacher and The Breacher: Revenant because it allowed me to retain the rights to my works, bring home a larger royalty, and enjoy greater freedom with how I manage my novels.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
While I can't claim to be an expert on the field, I do predict that the future of book publishing has an electronic horizon. The eBooks claim the market, and independent publishing – due to its many advantages for authors – will grow in popularity.
