About JoMarie DeGioia:
JoMarie DeGioia is a bestselling author of Historical and Contemporary Romance. She’s known Mickey Mouse from the “inside,” has been a copyeditor for her tiny town’s newspaper, and a bookseller. She is the author of over 40 Romances, and writes Young Adult Fantasy/Adventure stories and Paranormal Romance too. She gets lost in DIY projects around the house and works out plot ideas during long runs. She divides her time between Central Florida and New England, and you may contact her at JoMarie@JoMarieDeGioia.com.
What inspires you to write?
I find inspiration all around me! Observing people, watching old movies, interacting with my family. Characterization is fascinating to me, and feeds my stories.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually begin with a rough outline, maybe with more detail if there is a mystery involved. Character sketches with backgrounds, physical appearance, and their main goals, motivations, and conflicts follow. Then I jump in with both feet! I get to know my characters better in those first few chapters, and make sure I have a handle on them before going forward. I edit as I write, so the edit process isn't quite as painful as it could be, lol.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don't interview them, if that's what you mean. I do follow what they "decide" to do some of the time, and it can lead to some great "ah-ha!" moments that can shape the rest of the book!
What advice would you give other writers?
Write what you love to read. It will come through to the reader. You can learn grammar and punctuation, but you must love your story before going forward.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I'm a hybrid author, which seems to work well for me. This allows me to work with publishing houses as well as put out books myself. I can control the release of my self-published books, and both my indie and my traditional-model published books seem to promote each other!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It's very exciting that there are more options now than ever before for authors. I believe both traditional-model and indie publishing will continue for the foreseeable future.
