Contemporary romance author Jolyse Barnett loves mysteries, solving puzzles, romance, good vs. evil, and happily-ever-afters. In her Mystic Escapes series, she adores blending reality with the mythological because she believes there’s an element of the supernatural in the unexplained miracles and happenings of everyday life…the magical things in our world that give us hope for something beyond our existence.
What inspires you to write?
I find inspiration everywhere, from conversations I overhear to news stories I watch, song lyrics, movie themes, or people I’ve known. When you catch me daydreaming, I’m likely in the middle of crafting new scenarios for the characters in my head and if I appear moody, it’s probably because I’m itching to sit down for a marathon writing session. I’m happiest when creating.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m a hybrid since I plot the major beats of the story first, but then “pants” the details when I sit down to write. That, of course, only happens weeks or even months after I’ve thoroughly delved into my hero’s and heroine’s backstories, motivations, and goals.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Definitely. It’s their story, why shouldn’t they contribute?
What advice would you give other writers?
Write and read a lot, and remember to focus on your own creative journey. Everyone’s is different.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I don’t have the luxury of time necessary to self-publish, which involves being both an author and business contractor. I’d advise all authors—whatever path they choose—to learn as much as possible about the publishing industry and explore marketing strategies/trends.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Based on the readers I know and the recent trends I’ve observed in publishing, I believe the demand for print books will remain steady, although more and more readers will likely avail themselves of e-books as the cost of e-readers drop and more authors/publishers go the ebook route.

What genres do you write?: I write mostly contemporary romance, but my Mystic Escapes series for Foundations is a blend of romantic suspense and adventure with a dash of magical realism.
