About John Duggan:
This is my first complete novel though I am working on two others. All my work is drawn from my experience as a soldier in various conflicts over more than thirty years around the world. I started soldiering at the age of 15.I am now living a peaceful, rural retirement but my partner motivated me to begin writing and that’s something I was surprised to find I enjoyed
If anyone wants to contact me I am on @johnduggan27 and ready to chat
I would appreciate any reviews anyone wishes to post
Thank you
What inspires you to write?
I have thought about writing for a long time but assumed people were no longer bothering with books. I am glad to have been proved wrong and think everyone should at least try to write or, failing that, read more/
Tell us about your writing process.
Having had virtually no formal education I tend to simply sit down and type, try to make sense and then let my wife critique and organise it. She understands computers which is a great help and she pulls no punches when she edits. I suppose that explains why there are periods when I don’t know what to say but it seems to work out in the end.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
A lot of my characters are based on real people I have known or at least a type of people I have worked for. That means I do sometimes sometimes talk to them and “hear” what they would say
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep trying. It isn’t easy and you may never earn a penny from it but like all things in life, if you never try something, you will always regret it. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes or showing your ignorance either. I have no idea what my Author home page link is (below) but that won’t stop me from trying to use the forum. Be bold, the only person in this world to be afraid of is yourself.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I didn’t have a clue how to publish anything and all the publishers seemed to despise first timers so my wife looked into self publishing. That means an awful lot of work on this social media thing which is beyond someone like me but never give up and don’t be afraid of bad reviews. Some of them will be from people genuinely trying to help and the others are not worth worrying about. Once you have self published don’t just sit back and do nothing. I made that mistake, partly because I know nothing of social media and partly because I was busy. You won’t sell if you don’t work and keep trying the traditional publishers. If you are worried about money then build your sales up slowly using free forums like this one. They are a godsend.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
There are an awful lot of people who still love reading and writing. Perhaps not as many as there should be but there will always be a market for a good story teller. You may need a good editor or publicist but whatever you write, someone will like it. That being said there must be a future for authors and book publishing, especially if we support each other. It may be that the future is electronic or it may not but nobody knows at this point in time.
