Jo grew up in Maryland with four siblings, three parents and an endless number of cousins within the vicinity – but it was too cold up North for this thin blooded girl. So today, she lives in Florida with her two girls and a husband that shares her same sense of humor and basic take on life as we know it.
Life is too short to put dreams on the back burner.
Jo tells contemporary stories with romance, humor, the supernatural, the paranormal, suspense, mystery, action and anything else she can think up.
In 2012, she wrote Cursed be the Wicked, a character driven, paranormal mystery romance that was picked up by Soul Mate Publishing and released in March of 2014. Since then, Jo has also written a couple of short stories and her recently contracted contemporary romantic comedy, entitled Cookie Cutter, is set to release on March 23, 2015 through Little Bird Publishing.
What inspires you to write?
Everything from pictures to movies, to TV or songs. Sometimes a conversation I have with friends will do the trick.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m definitely a pantser, as some would call it. Most of the time. I’ve outlined one or two stories here and there but mostly I just like to see where the writing takes me. I typically collect visuals throughout the process to help me see the characters better. And I always always always have a playlist to help me write as well.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I’ve had an argument or two with a few of my characters. There’s one that nags at the back of my mind during every other story I’ve written. He’s my favorite and he will hopefully be getting his own story soon.
What advice would you give other writers?
To find a balance of everything in your life. Being a writer is part of who you are, just don’t forget all the other parts while you’re following your path. And create a loyal, everlasting circle of trust. They are important. Always.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wanted to go small publisher because I think you get more detailed attention to you and your story with the smaller houses. I’m not saying I’m opposed to big houses. I think they have a lot to offer too. I simply felt more comfortable going small, dipping my toes, so to speak.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It’s been such a great thing to see more authors getting their works published when at one point, that could never have happened. There are so many new opportunities now. When I see self published authors getting recognition and turning out to be best sellers, it gives me hope that it might happen for me, too.
