Author Bio:
Author. Dreamer. Entrepreneur.
That’s how Jessica Kelly describes herself. Just like the main character in her first book, Trick Play, Jessica believes that hard work is the key to success. Luckily, though, creating new characters and new plot twists doesn’t feel like work to her! Jessica has always had a passion for writing, and she has dreamed of becoming a successful author for more years than she can count.
So what about the “Entrepreneur” part?
That proves just how serious Jessica is about turning her dream into reality. Her goal isn’t to write a book or two in her spare time. Instead, she’s focused on building a successful writing career from the ground up. She’s not content to JUST have a dream. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it come true.
Jessica began living the dream the moment she started writing Trick Play. When she’s not dreaming up new story ideas, this native Floridian can be found spending quality time with friends and family, soaking up the sun on the beach, and — of course — reading.
What inspires you to write?
Writing fiction has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I have always loved getting immersed in stories and connecting with characters. Being able to give that same experience to my readers is the biggest rush I can think of!
Tell us about your writing process.
My head is full of ideas, so I start with a blank Word document and start typing details about different characters. Once I know WHO I’m going to be writing about, I figure out WHAT is going to happen to them. I hand-write the plot for each section individually, on a separate sheet of paper (yes, I’m old school!). That way, I can easily flip through my notes when I’m writing. Then, when it comes time to proofread, I like to let the book sit for a little while. That way, I can attack it with a fresh set of eyes.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes! I had the biggest crush on Brock while I was writing “Trick Play”! Some of the things Rebecca says to him are what I would have said if I were in her shoes 😉
What advice would you give other writers?
Take a cue from Nike and Just Do It. Your dreams are never going to come true if you don’t dedicate some time and some hard work to them. As fun as it is to sit around and think about what it would be like to be a published author, the actual experience is WAY better! I’m still in shock that I’ve got a book floating around out there! The adrenaline rush has gotten me even more excited to start working on the next book!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wanted the least amount of red tape and the biggest amount of editorial control!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the “big boy” publishers are going to get a real run for their money! Ebooks are so popular that the days of NEEDING a fancy publisher to write are over. Luckily, that gives readers so much more to choose from!
What genres do you write?
Romantic suspense
What formats are your books in?
