About Jens C Budinger:
Jens C. Büdinger is the author of the Queen of Shards and the Chronicles of Lilith series.
In 2018, after working as a lawyer for almost 7 years, Jens decided to leave his legal career to pursue his own journey. From start-ups to UX design to crypto and writing, Jens has a wide range of experience and interests making him a nomadic wanderer in a sea of infinite opportunities.
Jens' love of writing and telling stories began at a tender age but was always put on the backburner. This was until November 2019 when Jens finally decided to embark on the dream of writing and completing the Chronicles of Lilith series.
The Chronicles of Lilith's inception began around 15 years ago. Many books were started and never finished, largely due to time and commitment issues apart from lack of experience. However, this long road brought him back to the writer’s desk with the commitment and resolve to see this through, whatever it takes.
Jens currently resides in Malta, a little island in the middle of the Mediterranean. He spends his free time gaming, gardening, playing guitar and cuddling his cats.
What inspires you to write?
Many things. When it came to the Chronicles of Lilith I would say it’s a mix of my own instinct to understand existence and the meaning of life, my love for story telling and games and films that inspire me and a hint of LSD haha.
Writing in general, I would just say I love to imagine and tells stories and see how people would react to them. It's just one ofthe fulfilling parts of it apart from the creative aspect per se.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Can't say I have a favourite. I also mostly read non-fiction which by and large makes the term "favourite" somewhat redundant. But I had to mention a couple, I would say Oscar Wilde, Will Durant, Carl Jung, Frank Herbert and Viktor Frankl.
Tell us about your writing process.
That’s a long story. I’m most definitely a planner. I leave pantsing for the last undefined 10% of the novel (ie. The scene details etc). I use a massive Miro Board (which is basically a digital whiteboard) where I plan everything and use it as a repository for ideas, themes, character profiles etc. I’m extremely meticulous in this sense and perhaps too much of a perfectionist at time, hence why it takes me a while to release a new book.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I personally, do not interact directly with them. I don't think they'd be very happy with me hehe.
What advice would you give other writers?
Hmmm. There is so much. Besides the obvious such as get professional editors and cover designers involved, I would say Market as early as possible – without it detracting you from your project. I see so many bookstagrammers spend their time devoted to instagram without having even published a book. On the otherhand zero marketing is obviously a problem. Its certainly an issue that plagues me but frankly I'd rather spend time creating books and stories than peddling to the algothrims and their whims
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I am self-published and the main reason I chose to do so was because I wanted absolute creative freedom and would absolutely not budge on any of the creative aspects of my story just to make it more palatable to the publishing industry. Furthermore, I realised that the amount of work would roughly be the same anyway and I’d be giving up most of my intellectual property rights to a publishing company that wouldn’t have the heart and dedication that I have to see my full vision realised.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I doubt much will change other than the publishing industry acting more as marketer than editors and the like. A lot of people are now shifting to self-publishing as it becomes cheaper to get things done, through AI and what not. My guess is that there may emerge some new competitors to platforms like Amazon which would be a welcome change.
What genres do you write?: Metaphysical Dark Fantasy / Sci – Fi
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
