About Jen Pitts:
Jen Pitts is a lifelong mystery reader who turned her obsession into writing cozy mysteries of her own. When she isn’t plotting fictional murder and mayhem, she’s chugging coffee, traveling, reading, and enjoying life with her children and husband in the Pacific Northwest.
What inspires you to write?
I've loved mysteries all my life. Creating characters who live in my favorite city, New Orleans, was the perfect way to combine writing with my love of mysteries.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I read anything by Louise Penny and Riley Sager. And I'll still pick up an Agatha Christie book now and then even though I've read them so many times.
Tell us about your writing process.
I outline my books, but I know that the outline will change as I write. My characters have a mind of their own! I use Scrivener to write my books as it keeps everything organized. I tend to write out of order so I can easily move chapters around in this program. And when I get stuck, I go back to good old pen and paper.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, my characters definitely talk to me! I've started writing a scene and my characters then change everything. They can be demanding. 🙂
What advice would you give other writers?
Just write! It can be scary to get started, but it's worth it! And remember, you can't edit an empty page.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I've been part of a writing critique group for a few years and they encouraged me to publish. I decided to self-publish as I like to control when the books come out, the covers, and everything else that goes along with it. There is a ton of information out there about self-publishing so read up before you start.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think more and more books will be published. Between traditional publishers and those of us who self-publish, there are many ways for books to come out into the world. And I don't think reading will ever go out of style!
What genres do you write?: Mystery, Cozy Mystery
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print, Audiobook
