Author Bio:
James Snyder was born in Memphis, Tennessee and fell in love with the cadence and sound of storytelling as a child, listening to the meandering tales of his Southern grandmothers and great aunts. While still a child, his family moved to Napa Valley, California where he attended middle and high school, and began taking writing classes at the local college. He left after a year to join the military, and was a soldier with a tactical mobile operations unit in Germany when, pulling a Harz mountaintop guard duty one night during a snowstorm, he had the chance encounter with another soldier that ultimately became the genesis for his debut military thriller AMERICAN WARRIOR.
He is also the author of the suspense thriller DESOLATION RUN, the young-adult/new-adult trilogy THE BEAUTIFUL-UGLY, the short story collection TALES OF THE LATE TWENTIETH CENTURY, and other literary works.
“Berlin Diaries” is his occasional blog at JamesSnyder.net where he further discusses the backgrounds of his, and other, writings.
He currently lives in Texas.
What inspires you to write?
I would not call it inspiration as much as I am unable not to write. Beyond that, this is a crazy world, and I am just trying to record it as best I can. Plus, writing for me is the greatest high in the world.
Tell us about your writing process.
I like to use Microsoft OneNote to organized my material. I also use excel spreadsheets a lot to track story and plot and time lines. I do a lot of story-organizing and research before I start the narrative. After that, it’s endless drafts before it goes to my editor and beta readers for feedback. Then back to more drafts, etc., until I feel it’s finished. Actually it’s never finished. I finally just divorce it and move on.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Both. They talk to me when the character’s working. I talk to them when it isn’t. Sometimes I yell at them, but then they sulk and I feel bad and everyone goes to their corner for a timeout.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write what you love reading. Don’t write what’s trendy or your friends are writing. Also, if your own writing doesn’t thrill you to read it, reconsider what your’re doing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Currently I self-publish under my own label.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It’s going to continue to change and change fast and we need to continue to try and understand what’s going on and how to react to remain relevant.
