About James Miller:
James Miller began writing poetry as an undergraduate in the English department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in creative writing, James continued to New York University where he received his Master of Fine Arts in poetry. After graduating, he began teaching creative writing and composition at the college level. Since then, his poetry has been published widely both at home in the States and abroad. His first book of poetry, Shell Songs, was published in 2018. James is also a singer-songwriter, and much of his music can be heard at jamesmillerarts.com. As with all things, he owes a great deal of gratitude to his father and brother for their love and support.
What inspires you to write?
I believe that beauty cleanses the mind, and I often find that my brain needs a good washing. So, when I write, I try let my mind and soul connect with beauty so to give me new life. From this search for beauty, my faith is born, and with it the love that I hope gives life to my poetry. Beauty, faith, and love are the source that inspires me to write. It is these three ingredients which form the foundation of my soul and art.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
My favorite poets are John Keats, William Wordsworth, and Shakespeare. I am very drawn to the Romantic era as far as poetry goes. I believe that the appreciation of nature often leads us to becoming connected to the eternal. I like to think my poetry draws from this inspiration. Nature and its eternal spirit run throughout my poetry.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually begin writing because I am overcome by a feeling. Art comes from the subconscious, and in that respect, there is always a mystery as to what gives birth to a poem. I really just become completely focused on the poem to the point where nothing else exists outside of the poem. It is like entering a deep prayer which I repeat until the poem is finished. It is a very spiritual experience.
What advice would you give other writers?
I don't really have any advice to give. I just hope they love what they do. I mean for me writing is a very spiritual experience. It brings me closer to God. It many ways it is an act of faith. But each writer has their own reason for writing. As I said, I just hope they love what they do.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My best friend works in the field of book production and design layouts. In this case, it was very easy for me to self-publish Walkways. I got to do it my way, and I didn't have to wait a year to see my book in print.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I don't have a view on this topic. I think it is great when a poet can see their poems in print. It is a blessing. I hope all poets can see their poems in a book.
