What inspires you to write?
I cherished the opportunity to record and showcase my family history. And another thing that truly motivated me to write The Emerald Castle in less than two months was the fact that it was, in a sense, autobiographical, so I was recording my personal history and telling my story.
For Sleeping Beauty, I thought about the Disney version and it inspired me to showcase my history by creating a version of the story set in Dominica. The estate in the story could be my father’s property in Dominica. Writing this book was like connecting my family history to Sleeping Beauty.
I think it’s for that reason that families record and pass down their history and treasure their heirlooms, that people throw parades to celebrate their heritage, to connect themselves to history and the things that were part of their culture or ancestors’ lives. I also wanted to layer Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Crossing the Bar into the story, which I thought was a lyrical and unique twist.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I don't want to choose favorites!
Tell us about your writing process.
I outlined some aspects of The Emerald Castle. I had a workbook, and I wrote down how I wanted to portray certain characters and a certain scene I wanted to include. For Sleeping Beauty, I looked up the Brothers Grimm's version of the story and researched Caribbean history and combined it into a story.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don't know about all that, but I definitely made my characters personal. I definitely included idiosyncrasies, special interests and skills.
What advice would you give other writers?
What I've learned is that you should research. That way, your book will be rich and accurate. And you should make sure you write what you're interested in or feel passionate about.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My mom was beginning to publish books, and my books are published under her company. I can't speak for others, but I encourage them to research so they can choose their route.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I am very hopeful!
