About Giana Monroe:
Giana Monroe holds several degrees, including one in medicine, and is a licensed Zumba instructor. With several published works under her belt, she enjoys writing and is hard at work on her next project. In her spare time she likes to read, write, dabble in spoken word poetry, and choreograph fun, energetic Zumba routines.
What inspires you to write?
My experiences, and those of the people around me, inspire me to write. We all have stories to tell, some good, some bad, but they can all be used to learn something and/or inspire in some way. Also, those who support me inspire me to write.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process can vary depending on my mood. While I do like to jot down notes when an idea or a thought hits me, many times I just write on the fly. When something does come to me, I may write it in my notebook if I’m still awake. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I’ll either text it or email it to myself so I don’t forget. Gotta love technology! Lol
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
The characters I create do talk to me, and much of the time it can be at the most inappropriate of times, like when I’m at work, or in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping. Lol But that’s okay, because that’s when I come up with some of my best character lines.
What advice would you give other writers?
I would tell readers and authors alike to never give up on their goals or their dreams. No matter how old you are, or what your life circumstances are, you can succeed. It may not be easy, and there probably will be pitfalls along the way, but with hard work, determination, and the backing of the people who truly love and support you, it can happen.
On a side note, writing is a great form of therapy. Getting your thoughts out can sometimes help you work through your issues. No matter how you choose to express yourself (a notebook/journal, computer, voice recorder, etc.), just do it!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’ve had the opportunity to have works published in anthologies published by the awesome author Brenda Hampton. Honestly, I don’t know too much about the publishing world, so, for now, I prefer to be published by someone I trust, someone I know has my best interest at heart.
For any author, newbies and established, I would tell them to explore all publishing options. What might work for one project might not be suitable for another. Do your research from all angles, and look at market trends, because at the end of the day, you want to reach the largest audience possible.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The literary world is forever changing. Right now it appears eBooks are the way to go, but in the next few years, something new may come along. And, of course, you’ll always have your traditionalist; people who like the feel of a book in their hands.
For myself, I actually prefer paperback books. It just lends a more personal flavor to reading for me.
