About Gaston King:
Gaston King, a devoted animal caretaker, holds an unwavering passion for storytelling and calls Saint Augustine, Florida, home. Since 2017, he has immersed himself in the world of conservation and the nurturing of animals under professional care. His journey in working with, around, and for animals led him to his wife, a fellow animal enthusiast who shares his love for marine mammals.
With an unshakeable passion for the art of storytelling, he carved out his niche, and found his voice both on paper and onstage. During weekends, he volunteers at a wildlife reserve, where he engages with a diverse array of exotic animals, including lions, tigers, and a special coatimundi.
Drawing from his background in theatre, King has embarked on a mission to seamlessly blend his love for animals and theatrical storytelling. His unique combination of experiences and heartfelt commitment to animals sets the stage for an exciting literary journey into the country of Ignacia.
What inspires you to write?
Writing to me is an incredible, therapeutic and creative outlet that allows me to combine my real-life experiences with my imagination. My passion for animals has been a huge driving force for why I was able to bring my latest piece to life. As a wildlife animal caretaker, the animals I care for and learn about have always been an important subject.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Ernest Hemingway
Stephen King
Edmond Rostand
Tell us about your writing process.
With original stories it's important to at least categorize your thoughts accordingly and allow your creativity room to breathe. That being said I'll story board potential plots that circle around or cohesively lead into a certain climactic moment. If that real and raw climax remains at the forefront of my mind throughout the writing process, I know where I need to go. Then I'll begin to world build and pave the path to get there.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I personally don't listen or talk to my characters. Honest dialogue should come naturally and come to light when a writer recalls certain conversations with certain people in real life. You use those energies to write your conversations.
What advice would you give other writers?
It's easy to give up and look at the workload authors face when self-publishing. You can spend a lifetime writing stories, but until you take the necessary steps, those written works will be nothing but stories that sit and collect dust. You have to put in the time to get your work out there. You owe it to yourself. Please be patient with yourself throughout the writing process. This story has taken me two years and some change to properly write, edit, and re-edit over and over again. Remember why you decided to write that story in the first place. If it's important to you, then you'll make it happen. I wish you luck on your creative journey.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to pursue the indie author route and self-publish my book. I figured if I was going to put all my extra time and energy outside of my regular job, I may as well learn all of the many tools to the trade. That and the extra royalties doesn't hurt. I'm publishing through Amazon KDP as an eBook, paperback and hardcover for my book.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe more and more authors and writers out there will see the accessibility of self-publishing and eventually more and more will side with self-publishing. However, at that point it could become difficult for self-published works to stand out. There has to be a balance for publishing companies to want to continue working with authors. It shouldn't be this difficult for authors to find the proper representation. Things need to change if authors are going to continue to grow with society.
What genres do you write?: Young adult, Sci-Fi, Action-Adventure
