Interview with Author – Faye Hall

By Book Goodies

About Faye Hall:
I am from rural northern Queensland, and I write Historical Romantic suspense novels set in and around the Burdekin region. As well as romance, my books contain local history, place names, crimes, drama and scandal.

I used to be published with Venus Press, Red Sage and Beachwalk Press, but since the closure of these companies, I have taken to independently publishing.

As well as a published author of 15 novels, I am a wife, mother of 5 school-aged children, stepmother to 4 adult children and carer for my elderly mother.

What inspires you to write?
I grew up in rural North Queensland and I loved listening to the stories of the families that migrated to the district from overseas looking for a new life with new opportunities.

Ever since I started writing I wanted to tell these stories and the struggles of the people who came to North Queensland and the relationships that endured to tell their stories.

These are the stories I want to write and tell readers about.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I got into writing because of Amanda Quick novels, but also because of Agatha Christie novels. So many have inspired me though, especially those that have had to deal with rejection after rejection just because they didn't follow the trends or expected requirements.

Tell us about your writing process.
I always start with a character outline and basic plot ideas on paper. When I put these into the computer I try to expand on them, but if that's not possible, then I go back and try to expand the plot on paper first.

As for writing at a specific time – I have 5 school-age children still at home so I write mostly early mornings and late at night. Weekends are good sometimes too. My office is in my bedroom which is my comfort zone but also easy for the children to come and speak with me whenever they need to. I tend not to isolate myself away from the family when I write, nor do I usually write in dead silence.

Music is always good to get me in the mood for writing and developing a story, mostly anything from musicals. If I need inspiration, then an old romance movie I've seen a hundred times is usually the best thing to get me back on track.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I start with character features and their family background or reason for being where they are when the book starts on paper. From there the characters tend to surprise me, for good and for bad. Some I actually don't like how they develop, but I can't envision writing them any other way either.

What advice would you give other writers?
Write from your heart, not what you think the reader wants because it's impossible to satisfy everyone.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I used to be published with Venus Press, Red Sage and Beachwalk Press, but since the closure of these companies, I have taken to independently publishing.

I'm glad I started with traditional publishers as I learnt a lot about the publishing process, but it can be suffocating with all its rules too. Self-publishing is hard work but it's been very rewarding to write what I want and how I want.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I hope the craft survives the invasion of AI software that has been seeping into the industry, allowing people to steal ideas and use computers to write what they need. To be honest it scares me and I fear for the future of those that actually write their own books.

What genres do you write?: Historical Romance, Romantic Suspense, Romantic drama, Historical Drama, Romantic Thriller, Australian Romance
