About Emilia Ramos Samper:
My name is Emilia Ramos Samper and I am one of the youngest people to ever publish a novel. I wrote my first book, "Crown of Scales and Wonder" when I was ten and my second book is coming out this year. I've won 1st and 3rd place in the LaPlume Young Writer's Contest. My hobbies include theatre, voice, and playwriting!
What inspires you to write?
I have been fascinated with books ever since kindergarten. There was something about the worlds and characters that authors could create with a single sentence that made me so determined to do the same. In elementary school, I buried myself in books until one day I decided to write one. In fourth grade, I did, and now I'm a proud twelve-year-old author. Beasts, dark magic, and all things fantasy inspire the world of my books. However, I also take aspects of trips and people I've met on them into my books.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
One of my favorite authors is Christopher Paolini, because I love the way he writes mythical creatures with such grace and depth. I also love Leigh Bardugo for her intriguing character work. In her novel, "Six of Crows" the characters have so much depth and backstory, something I try to include in my own work.
Tell us about your writing process.
Between school and work, I have very little time to louse off during drafting. So, I have gotten into the habit of setting word counts and goals to keep me on track. I love outlining, planning, and making all sorts of maps for my world and character relationships!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Actually, I often get ideas for character conversations while I'm writing, and before I know it I'm out of my seat acting them out!
What advice would you give other writers?
My advice for other authors would be that no age is too young to start writing (heck, I published at ten!), no matter what anyone says. Also, whenever you get caught up in the world of promotion and marketing and sales tactics and all the difficult things, remember who you write for and why you love to write.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish my book on Amazon because I wanted to have control over the process and work at my own pace. I encourage upcoming authors to do research on both traditional and self-publishing to make an informed decision about what is best for them.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that traditional publishing will remain a prominent industry, but self-publishing is on the rise as more people decide to have control over their content and selling strategies.
What genres do you write?: fantasy, teen
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
