About Ellie Firestone:
Ellie Firestone lives in the beautiful rolling hills of the English Cotswolds, where she spends her days reading, swimming, and writing her stories.
She also visits her grandparents in Texas for weeks at a time, and it’s here that she rides horses, goes fishing, swims, and writes even more stories.
She has several pets, including some fish that breed like rabbits and a hyper (but very cute) English Toy Terrier named Bonnie, whose hobbies include playing fetch and eating various items of clothing.
What inspires you to write?
Well, my current series of books is inspired by my grandma’s old ranch in Texas. I’m a horse lover, and as a child I just loved staying with my grandma so I could go down to the barn every day to pet the horses. I always knew I wanted to write a book about the horses — I just never quite imagined that they’d be superhero ones!
More recently, I’ve been inspired by learning more about space. The universe is so weird and wonderful, and I like to try and get some of that weirdness and wonder into my writing.
Tell us about your writing process.
I just go for it! I’ll have a basic plot idea in mind, but I usually don’t even know how the book is going to end before I get there. I’m trying to start planning my books out more before I start writing them, though, because I often get stuck and have to spend a long time thinking before I can figure out where to go next.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t usually talk to my characters per se. It’s more like I’m aware of what their reactions would be to any given situation, and what drives them to keep going.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing. Even if you feel like you’ve hit a dead end, push through it. Any writing is better than no writing at all.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Even though I’d written a book, I thought that it seemed crazy that I’d ever get it published. I knew that traditional publishers are super hard to get accepted by, and that I could be waiting months only to find out I’d been rejected. Then, I learned about how you could self-publish on Kindle. Even better, my dad (who’s a computer person) figured out how to format a Kindle eBook. It was just too good an opportunity to pass up, and I’m still surprised at how easy it is to publish your work with Amazon. I’d advise new authors to at least consider self-publishing (especially with Amazon Kindle), though the disadvantage is that you have to do all the promotion and marketing yourself.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that print books will always be popular There’s nothing quite like the feel of the pages and the smell of the glue! However, I think the eBook market will continue to grow, because evolving technology and devices make it easier than ever to get the books you want.
