What inspires you to write?
From the time my children were very young I was always coming up with rhymes or songs. For this particular story I was inspired after seeing the Broadway show Wicked. It got me thinking; what other "villains" out there aren't really villains. If they could tell their side of the story what would it be. I decided to give a voice to an iconic villain in children's literature, the Big Bad Wolf.
Tell us about your writing process.
Many of my stories have just come right out. I had so many I just started righting them down. With tweaking, here and there, a story is born.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I absolutely listen to my character. I feel like I know his personality. My original plan was to write this one book but Jax led to other stories that he has been the villain. This has led me to write two more books from the "wolf's" point of view.
What advice would you give other writers?
There is always the thought of don't give up. I wrote these books years ago and it has taken this long to get them published because I went about it in a hodge podge way. I had many manuscripts and I sent them to many different publishers. I should have stuck with one and sent that one out.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to publish the book because so many people loved the idea. They were really interested in this point of view. Teachers have said this fits right into their Second Grade curriculum.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the physical book will never go out of style. People love to hold a book. I know my kids used to sleep with their books. There is definitely a place in the market for all types of books.
