About Dove Winters:
I am an author, wife, mother, and night owl from Nebraska. I’ve been writing since I could hold a pen, and I find I can’t stop writing, even after I leave the computer. Books tend to play out like movies in my mind, and my goal is to one day see one of my works on the big screen! Gray skies, good music, and horses are three things that inspire me. Happy reading!
What inspires you to write?
Often, listening to music is all I need to come up with good ideas. But I also like to take events from real life and think, “What if….” Fill in the blank. Life is full of story ideas!
Tell us about your writing process.
When I come up with a book idea, I spend a lot of time listening to music to get a feel for the tone of the story and for different scenes. I spend a lot of time thinking, working things out in my head, before I ever write the first word. Then I outline it. The outline usually goes through several drafts, and changes often during the actual writing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Characters have a way of changing a story against the author’s will. Sometimes you just have to follow them! They usually know what’s best for the story.
What advice would you give other writers?
Read good books by good authors.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’m exploring self-publishing right now, because I’m able to get my books out faster and I have control over what happens to them. But I may try traditional publishing later. I’m open to both!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think self-publishing is going to become more popular, with so many devices out there making it so easy. I just hope we never lose physical books, because there is nothing quite like holding a book in your hands and losing yourself in the pages!
