About Derek J. Kenmuir:
Derek J. Kenmuir is a Poet, Author and Illustrator born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His passion and love for his two wonderful children brought characters like Eddie The Teddy and the Two Brothers series alive. His writing style is different from most, most if not all of his stories are written in rhyme format, poetry in motion so to speak. He feels the world needs to bring the fun loving rhyming adventures back into children’s picture books across the globe. Right now, he is focusing on children, teen and young adult type of books, but that may change in the future, please keep dropping by.
What inspires you to write?
Mostly my kids, but anything in this world, when you’re a writer your imagination runs wild.
Tell us about your writing process.
If it is a children’s picture book I am working on the first thing I do is design some illustrations for the cover. Once that is done it inspires me to build a story behind it. Same goes with the fiction I write, first the cover and then the plot line and then BOOM the story just flows.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters speak to me
What advice would you give other writers?
Never give up, if you feel the story you’re working on is going nowhere put it into a drawer and then come back to it in a couple of months. Or get a fresh pair of eyes on it and ask for advice. It is your story, you don’t have to follow the rules, break them and have fun doing it.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’ve been trying to go the traditional way, but when I feel the book has received a certain number of rejections I self-publish them. Publishers/Literary agents may not like them, but everyone that has ever read my books have.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe more and more self-published authors will rise up and take over the industry because some, not all publishers and being too selective. I understand they want the best of the best, but give a author a chance and you’ll see they will blow up the industry
