About Denyse Bridger:
Canadian born and bred, and a lifelong dreamer, I began writing at an early age and can’t recall a time when I wasn’t creating in some artistic form. My life has had several on-going love affairs that shape much of what I write. In the past half dozen years, I’ve released books in all lengths and genres, and it’s something I hope to continue to do for many more years. A visit to my websites will show the diversity of what is currently available, as well as other surprises and extras!
What inspires you to write?
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write. Everything inspires me, images, songs, moods…. but I think what drives me to write is the fact that I love to communicate with people, and creating stories touches people in ways that stay with them. You entertain them, make them think, cry, laugh… and that’s a special thing. You become part of every reader who gets lost in the stories you’ve created for them. A kind of magic, really.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’ve pretty much always been a writer who has to plan and outline, make pages of notes. If I know where I’m going with a story, then I can keep it on track and it flows better. I have to make the most of the limited time I have, so being able to sit down, read the last chapter of a book I’m working on and then consult the notes for the next section makes it very easy for me to keep the flow smooth and the story moving forward. I’ve tried writing blind, or pantser style, and it really does not work for me. Even if the story is only a 5K piece, I still need a few paragraphs that show me start, middle, end….
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t talk to them, but I do make them talk to me. *lol* Sometimes pieces of their pasts just appear without much thought, and those glimpses take me in new directions, but it always seems to tie together nicely.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write. It’s that simple. It’s very easy to talk about writing, not always so easy to do it. Don’t listen to the praise of the people who love you, they can seldom be objective. Learn all you can from other writers, listen to editors when they explain how things can be improved, and NEVER stop being willing to learn. Then, write!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I entered a contest at the suggestion of a friend, and was lucky enough to win, from there I haven’t looked back. Virtually all my catalogue is published with publishing companies, I’m not a self-pubber, and I suspect I never will be. I did it with a novella and a short story that’s free, but it’s not something I am driven to continue with, so I’ll stay with the current process for the time being.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the future of publishing is a slow down in the current pace. Readers, I believe, are getting tired of books that lack good editing and are poor quality. I think we need to slow and get back to a place where quality is more important than quantity. Otherwise, the industry becomes a cesspool that no one can respect.
