About Denise Bossarte:
Denise Bossarte lives in Texas with her husband and their colossal too-smart cat. Outside of her IT day job she is busy following her passions as a photographer, writer, and poet, and sharing the worlds of her mind and camera.
What inspires you to write?
I have a story that needs to be written. It won't leave my mind until I have to put pen to paper. I just have to let the words out!
Tell us about your writing process.
I start with an outline of the book, with each chapter on a note card with time, place, characters, plot, and high/low emotional change captured.
When I work on a chapter, I imagine how that scene will play out in my head. I ask myself, "What would so and so do in this situation? What is THEIR natural reaction?" Then I let the scene run through my mind like a movie.
I am a professional fine art photographer, so I am very visual person. This approach works well for me.
When it comes time to write, I'll replay the final version of that movie-scene in my mind and just record what I see for the scene and hear in the dialog. I think that helps to make things run smoothly and the prose and descriptions flow.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters drive the story. I am always surprised at what they come up with that I would not have considered. They don't actually speak directly to me or vice versa but in my process, they lead me to the best scenarios.
What advice would you give other writers?
Get out of your own way. If you have a story that needs to be told, then get it down on paper. Find beta readers, and get a professional editor and book cover designer. These things matter. Learn your craft and learn the business and go for it!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish my books because I didn't want to slog away at getting someone to believe in my book as much as I do. I am computer savvy and self-publishing seemed a good way to go. I joined several author groups and took courses to understand what it would take and dove into it!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think books will continue to flourish. There are more options all the time from self-publishers of great quality. It is wonderful time to be a reader and a writer!
