About Darren McGuinness:
With a varied background and imagination that needs no prompt to get to work, I found myself putting my ideas to the page, becoming invested in the characters I created with my first novel ‘The Nothingman’ in 2022.
A huge fan of fiction myself, my own inspirations come from the big household names in which we all have read and in some occasions have seen reach the big screen and some lesser known authors that have succeeded in gluing me to their pages!
I have a character dominant writing style that forces the reader and writer, to empathise, love, hate and everything in between!
What inspires you to write?
My inspiration tends to be sporadic. It can come from a song or particular lyric, a place I have visited or even something transferable from my day job.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Lee Child. Chris Offut. James Patterson. John Grissom. These are just a few, I could genuinely find a new author tomorrow and they’d make the list if their work catches me!
Tell us about your writing process.
When I have an idea or inspiration, I am usually underprepared and it starts as a note page on my phone! From there I scribble anything that I think is a key moment or character. The rest is a repeat of that process, if you can call it that, whilst punching the keyboard.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I’ll imagine them, their voice mostly and from there I often think about who I’d want to play them in a big screen version.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just do it. I delayed acting on my ideas for nearly two decades, it wasn’t the cool thing to do at school but my creative writing was a strong point that I deliberately dulled down. The nuances of being young and worried about how you are perceived played a part in that.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I attempted the formal submission process to many, many literary agencies. As it happens, like many before, my material didn’t work for them or they were interested in representing authors from other groups with characters that were different to mine. Perceive that how you want but it’s the way of the world! In no way will I discount this process as I continue to seek representation this way but if you want to self publish, go for it. I did.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that the recent balance is swaying toward self publishing. I am unsure if it’s an industry thing that is preventing access for new authors or something else with more control for the author but the flip side is the self marketing. This is where I, personally would prefer an agent as it’s not my strong point. Maybe we could see a hybrid version for the future of these approaches.
