About Connie Miller Pease:
I am the worship coordinator for my small church and have been a leader/speaker at workshops, retreats, camps, and conventions. I write both music and fiction. I have one children’s musical, A Light At Christmas, published by Meriwether Publishing and am working to get four more musicals up and running with another publisher. My first book, Mrs. Covington’s Sunday School Dropouts, was recently published by HopeSprings, an imprint of Chalfont House Publishing.
I have four grown children and a husband who laughs with me. Usually. I love dogs, Mountain Dew, and cheesecake in that order. My idea of a perfect vacation is spending some time outdoors in northern Minnesota, some time with family, and some time reading in front of a fire.
What inspires you to write?
People inspire me. I watch or learn of things people experience in their lives and I almost always send up a prayer for them. There is so much heartache in this world, but the amount of goodness always exceeds it. I’d like to think that putting a light touch on things that matter helps us frame many of those things in such a way that makes life a little easier. Humor does that. I don’t think of myself as a funny person. People love to tell me jokes because if I’ve heard it before, the punch line still surprises me and I laugh. I don’t know how or why I wrote (and am writing) books with some humor intertwined. I wanted to make life a little easier and a little better for people, and it has, for now, come out like this in my writing.
Tell us about your writing process.
I prefer things quiet and solitary. I sit at my computer with a cup of coffee and maybe some cheap chocolate and type out my imagination. Then I edit.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Sometimes I feel like I am my characters. Other times I look at them from a distance.
What advice would you give other writers?
It’s fun to write. It isn’t fun to get rejection letters. It will probably take longer to find an agent or publisher than it will to write your book. People close to you might not expect much to come of your efforts. They’re not being mean, they’re being human. After all, most folks don’t live with successful authors. You’ll have to do this without that encouragement. Don’t give up. I’m cheering for you!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wanted a publisher who would know more than I did about editing and marketing. Writing is solitary enough without having to publish it yourself, too.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Just observing the lay of the land, I think books will be more and more electronic and less on the page. I hate that. I don’t like reading with a device. Books seem more substantial in every way to me.
