About Christy Gissendaner:
Christy Gissendaner is a romantic comedy and paranormal romance author, who believes that laughter and love should go hand in hand.
Christy lives in Alabama with her husband and three sons. She is always hard at work on her next novel, but in her spare time she loves blackjack, karaoke, and anything resembling a vacation!
What inspires you to write?
My love of romance novels consumes me. As a child, I’d write my own “stories” when I ran out of books to read. I’d snitch my grandmother’s Harlequins and read them during the summer. As I grew older, I began to write because I enjoyed it. By the time I’d graduated college, it was something I “had” to do.
Tell us about your writing process.
(clearing throat) Hello. My name is Christy Gissendaner and I’m a pantser.
I’ve actually gotten a bit smarter about my writing lately. I’ve tried to rein in my rampant plot twists and wandering characters, two downsides to being a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Umm…that’s a hard one. I suppose I just write them. (shrugs) I talk to myself though if that counts?
What advice would you give other writers?
To never give up! That said, if you ever write yourself in a corner, don’t sit there and stare at the screen forever. End the scene and continue on. You can always go back and finish that scene later.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I read a call for submissions for Avon in the back of Julia Quinn’s book when I was in college. It convinced me to give it a shot. I didn’t get a contract with Avon, needless to say, but I did get one from another company!
A new author should definitely go the traditional route. At least, at first. Not all of us can come blazing out of the gate with a bestseller. Authors need experience, to know the general rules of marketing and writing, before they forge their own path.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I still believe there’ll be a return to traditional book publishing. Publishers will bend with the times, alter their pricing, to be competitive. If they do, authors will return.
