About Christina Kirby:
I hold a degree in Public Relations from Auburn University (War Eagle!). I worked in banking for four and a half years before deciding to become a stay at home mom to my two sons. Moving every couple of years because of my husband’s job, has afforded me the opportunity to meet all kinds of people and live in many different states, and fortunately writing is something I can take with me no matter where I live. I love chocolate and all things pop culture so if you love to talk movies, favorite TV shows or books, I’d love to hear from you.
What inspires you to write?
Anytime I read a great book it inspires me to want to write. There are certain books that have stuck with me, for example, Little Women, Rebecca, Harry Potter and countless others, and my desire to write started with a whim after reading a good book. I wonder if I could write a book? So, I tried. Granted it took me several years to finish it and it wasn’t great, but I kept at it because I realized that I truly loved writing.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually start with a vague idea and from there I fill out character worksheets. Aside from those initial sheets, I keep a notebook where I jot down key plot points or dialogue I might want to use, but other than that I let the story take me where it may.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I would say that I listen to them. That must be why I like to have quiet when I’m writing an intense scene. I need to be able to focus on what’s being said.
What advice would you give other writers?
Never stop trying and never stop learning. So many people wonder what if and then never try. Go after what you want.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I went the traditional route because I didn’t feel that I understood the business well enough yet to go out on my own. I needed guidance and I’ve received that and immeasurable support from my editor, Janet.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it will continue to change. Ereaders are gaining in popularity and I’m sure there will be another medium at some point which will burst onto the scene as a way for people to read books. You have to go with the flow in this business.
