What inspires you to write?
I’ve been an enthusiastic reader since grade school. In college, I discovered roleplaying games, I have been a Game Master for 35 years, and I discovered I wanted to share my stories!
Tell us about your writing process.
A story idea pops in my head – usually around three in the morning – and my mind won’t rest until I at least get an outline written! I procrastinate a lot, but eventually get that first draft done… then I throw it out and start over. I’m usually happy by the 4th or 5th draft. Then comes the (ugh!) editing – and more procrastination!
It took me 5 years to write “Flight of the Elves. Fortunately, it’s taking me half that time to finish my 2nd novel, “Relics of Kali”.
Even though I write Fantasy, I do a lot of research, to make sure I don’t write something that makes me look like a fool. I also proofread continuously, to ensure consistency!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters are mean to me – even the ones you think are nice! I try to write an event in two or three paragraphs, and they keep making me add more! They let me know when I write something they feel is “out of character” for them, and they laugh at my typographical errors!
Talk to my characters? Naaahhh. 😉
What advice would you give other writers?
Write and rewrite until you are satisfied with what you’ve written Then stop. There’s a danger in overthinking your writing!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was always fearful of being rejected by the Big Publishers, So self-publishing was a no-brainer for me!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I hope the trend in self-publishing (Createspace, Kindle, etc.) continues. What a plethora of great stories! And if it were up to the Big Publishers, we’d never see them!
