About Calista Skye:
Calista Skye has always been fascinated by the idea of worlds other than our own. She uses her writing to explore galactic civilizations, sexy alien warriors, and the women who love them. Her books are filled with a healthy dose of action and adventure, steamy romance, and the hope of true love amidst the stars.
What inspires you to write?
Life should be an adventure. I’m always amazed at the amazing things people do and the connections they make to the world around them, and more importantly, to one another. I believe that heroes exist, and that good books can help us experience more of that world … and even the worlds that only exists in our imaginations.
Tell us about your writing process.
I generally get a spark from … somewhere. Sometimes a theme in a book or movie resonates with me. Sometimes I’ll read an article about an interesting development. Other times, ideas just burst forth from somewhere deep in my subconscious. At that point, I put them through the wringer to see if there’s anything there, and then develop them accordingly.
I always start with my characters, because good characters are at the heart of every story. I ask myself what kind of people they are, and most importantly, what they need. Then I make it as difficult as possible for them to get it. As long as my characters are growing into better people by overcoming obstacles, I’ve got a good story.
What advice would you give other writers?
There’s never going to be a perfect time. You’re never going to be “ready.” And as long as you’re waiting for magical author fairy to fly in, bonk you on the head, and give you permission, you’ll never get any writing done. In other words, start before you’re ready. The only way you’ll improve is by getting into the trenches and putting your words in, day after day. Study writing craft. Read a lot of books.
There has NEVER been a better time to become a professional writer, and there may never be again.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’m all in with indie publishing. Yes, I’ve always been a rebel at heart, and I decided that I didn’t need the approval of anyone but my readers. More importantly, I wanted full creative control of my career and my work. As an indie-author, I’m far better able to respond to my readers than I would be with a traditional publishing house.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Indie-authorship has gone full mainstream. Competition is tougher than ever — and that’s a GREAT thing for the readers. It means we’ll need to continue to write and produce the best possible books we can.
