About C.B. Currie:
C.B. Currie studied History and Literature at the University of Auckland. He has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Japan and the UAE and traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and Africa. His eclectic career includes selling insurance, teaching English, and working as a flight attendant.
Growing up in the seventies and eighties, Currie loved Star wars and Indiana Jones, and read his first fantasy books. He now reads mostly non-fiction: history, military, economics, politics, and travel stories, which inspired him to write, of all things, Fantasy.
What inspires you to write?
Unusually for Fantasy, it’s the real world that interests me. I am inspired by history, current events and my own travels, experiences and relationships. That said I also have a list of favorite fantasy authors, including Martin, Cornwell and others, but my first love has always been non-fiction.
Influences include George R.R. Martin, Bernard Cornwell, Michael Moorcock and James Clavell; fantasy artists Larry Elmore, Keith Parkinson and Rodney Matthews. I also draw heavily from history books, especially on medieval Europe, and the ancient Near East.
Tell us about your writing process.
Definitely listen to my characters. I have a firm idea of where they’ll end up, but once I start writing, they choose the path.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I always stop every few moves and ask what their motivation is. Sometimes it is in tune with my original vision, sometimes in response to events. I try to keep characters and their reactions true to their personalities.
What advice would you give other writers?
Get on with it. Don’t procrastinate. Most people are afraid and don’t know they have a story till they start. They never start. So start today.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Amazon, but may look for a traditional publisher if it’s popular enough.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Digital. I’ll always have a soft spot for paperbacks, but that’s how I read, not how I write.
