About Brian Byrom:
I was born and raised in Southeast Texas where I nurtured (and continue to nurture) a lifelong passion for world mythology, philosophy, theology, and folklore. This, along with my love of nature and reading, led me to create my own universe that I could fill with characters and relics, mystery and lore. Writing has become one of the most enjoyable parts of my life, and I sincerely hope that you get a sense of that as you dive into my stories.
What inspires you to write?
My love of nature and mythology are my primary inspirations, but quiet time away from the outside world isn't bad either.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Frank Herbert, Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.P. Lovecraft, and Arthur Conan Doyle
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm half pantser, half planner. I work off a rough outline, but the details tend to veer off the path at times. I like that though, because it tends to create problems in my universe which provide excellent opportunities to bring something new and wonderful into the stories.
I take notes constantly and pile them up on my desk, then add them in when they fit into the main outline. The outline is kept in a spreadsheet, and I have a cork board with all of my characters, maps, and floor plans pinned to it.
What I feel to be my best ideas tend to come to me when I am waking up in the morning. That half-asleep state can be magical.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I try to see myself as the soul I believe them to be, which inevitably results in a little piece of me in each of them. Even the villains.
I can't say that I talk to them, but I let them work things out in my head.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be patient. Don't be discouraged if it is going slowly. And if you get stuck, skip ahead in the story. The problem you are stuck on will solve itself eventually.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Research and conversations with other authors. I have my book up on Amazon and B&N, which have been very slow. I am pursuing other options, and trying to build a following. I know it will be a slow process, but I am OK with that.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It is the wild west right now with all of the options. The future… similar to film. I think the big houses will always be around. Indie will stay strong, but small.
What genres do you write?: Low Fantasy, YA Fantasy, Fantasy/horror
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
