About Brenda Hampton:
I’m a native St. Louisan with a true gift and passion for writing. In 2002, I began crafting my memoir, In My Shoes, and years later, I’ve written more than twenty-plus novels, novellas and anthologies. I’m mostly known and recognized for creating one of the most addictive book series in literature, The Naughty Series. Readers refer to me as the writer who brings the heat, and as a literary agent, writers know me as the go-to person. My literary career is filled with many accomplishments, one being a National Bestselling Author. My name has graced the Essence Magazine Bestseller’s List, I was named a favorite female fiction writer in Upscale Magazine and also named in the Top 100 Most Admired African American Women in Literature. The majority of my literary works are published and distributed by Kensington/Urban Books and Strebor/Simon & Schuster.
In addition to writing and having an entrepreneurial spirit, I’m the founder of Brenda Hampton Entertainment, LLC. BHE is a reputable brand, revolving around all things in the entertainment arena, including books, movies, plays, etc. The primary goal of BHE is to work with and promote motivated, skilled and talented individuals who deserve an opportunity in many of the challenging and competitive industries that are difficult to get into. Through making vital connections, the objective is to open doors for unique individuals who seek to live out their dreams in the field of entertainment.
What inspires you to write?
What inspires me to write are my dedicated readers who often reach out to me about how much they enjoy my novels, and I’m also inspired by certain events that occur in my life.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is rather simple. I think about what topic/subject I wish to write about, use my imagination to create ideas and then type away. My characters tell me what to say as I type, and before I know it, my novels are complete without using outlines or character sketches.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Absolutely! Especially at night, when I’m trying to sleep. They refuse to let me.
What advice would you give other writers?
The advice I give to other writers is to be patient, perfect your skills, research, surround yourself with industry professionals who can assist you, be true to who you are and stay committed to what YOU want to write about.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I started out as a self-published author, but now, many of my novels are traditionally published. I think that starting my journey as a self-publishing author enabled me to learn more about the publication process. I was determined to make a name for myself, and by pounding the pavement, I had an opportunity to meet many readers and build a base who continues to support me. I encourage new authors not to shy away from self-publishing. Great rewards.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Telling it from an author/literary agent’s point-of-view, I think the traditional side of book publishing is in trouble. Many new, as well as traditionally published authors are now self-publishing their books. There are too many benefits to ignore, and I do believe that broader distribution will be made available to self-published authors in the near future. Basically, the middle man will, eventually, disappear. That’s just my opinion, but we’ll see what happens.
