About Bill Green:
William S. “Bill” Green is the straight-talking, edgy, no-holds-barred serial entrepreneur who has built multiple businesses during his 40-year career. Green is best known for “bootstrapping a startup” before anyone knew what the word “startup” meant. He propelled his first company, Wilmar Industries, from a flea market table to one of the largest industrial distribution companies in the U.S., now known as Interline Brands.
What inspires you to write?
About 3 years ago, my father, Marty, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 83. This unfortunate event was the catalyst that inspired me to start documenting my 40-year business career in case I got Alzheimer’s at some point in my life. I wasn’t sure if this disease was hereditary. I wanted to create a keepsake for my children and grandchildren, but over time it morphed into a book.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’ve only written one book that started out as a keepsake for my kids. I started documenting my career using an excel spreadsheet with all of my facts and started outlining.. I then dictated my voluminous outline and notes. I then the dictation transcribed and once I had a very rough draft I then began the major edits and revisions.
What advice would you give other writers?
If you have a story to share, don't wait – DO IT!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was a total novice and didn’t start talking to agents til I had the manuscript completed. I and had no clue how the process worked. I was offered a $10k advance from a traditional publisher but he said he would be 8-9 months before my book would be out. That was a time frame I wasn’t willing to live with. I was offered a traditional deal from another boutique publisher with no costs to me but again I wasn’t willing to wait 8-9 months. I then started talking to publishers that would release the book in a reasonable time frame so I chose Koehler Books.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it will continue to be disrupted by technology.
