About B.K. Raine:
B.K. Raine lives in North Carolina with her husband, teenage daughter, two dogs, and a cat she insists isn’t actually hers because every cat she’s ever owned has died a sudden and gruesome death. By profession, Raine is a media advertising executive but has been an author since she was 16, penning her first book on wide-ruled paper with a No. 2 pencil. Her first editor told her she couldn’t write but had some great ideas, and if she was willing to leave her pride at the door, he’d teach her the rest. Blood Toy is the debut novel in her dark urban fantasy series. Look for Book 2, Kindred Shadows, Fall 2015.
What inspires you to write?
My husband jokes that when I fall asleep at night, I turn off like someone flipped a light switch. In truth, I start spinning a story the moment my eyes close. I am inspired by what I create in that space between waking and dreaming.
Tell us about your writing process.
I tried to be an outliner when I started writing Kindred Shadows, the upcoming second book in my Blood Toy series. The first time I went off script was the first time I was happy with the direction of the story. So I guess I’m embracing my identity as a pantser from now on!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I hear my characters clearly in my head, but I rarely talk with them except in my dreams.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be willing to walk away. Not from your dream, but from a chapter, a character, a line, or a word that just isn’t working. I scrapped and started over on Blood Toy three times before I had a manuscript that worked. The most important steps in writing are the ones that happen after you finish your first draft.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I have a day job that takes up all my daylight hours. Since I am only free to be an author after dark, self-publishing for me was the only option.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The self-publishing world will get smaller as Amazon and the like discover way to weed out the scammers and incentivize authors to hone their craft before they hit ‘publish.’ Tradition publishing will then need to open up to compete.
