About B. K. Brain:
I have been writing fiction for twenty years, mostly supernatural thrillers, although I have dabbled in science fiction, fantasy and YA. I am a fan of many current and classic writers, such as Stephen King, George Orwell, Isaac Asimov, and many, many others. I’m also a rabid fan of the Marvel movies, and the Star Wars original trilogy.
What inspires you to write?
I’m inspired by great fiction, creative movies, real science, my own triumphs and tragedies, and an insatiable desire to create. Current events also get my inventive gears churning.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am an outliner, through and through. I know the end before I write a single word, yet stories do surprise me along the way as well. I used the “Hollywood Formula” for my latest novel, in an attempt to maximize emotional impact. I’m happy with the results and my initial readership seems to like the structure too.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
They speak to me as I write, and if I listen carefully, they tell me who they’d most like to be. Of course, sometimes they’re lying.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be sadistic. Devastate your characters at every turn. Punch them in the face. Destroy their entire worlds. At the 3/4 point leave them broken and with no way to win.
Then, prove yourself wrong.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I have self-published all of my books, after many, many submissions to traditional publishers and agents. I have heaping piles of rejections. And that’s okay. It’s just part of the journey. I will never give in, and neither should any serious writer.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Self-publishing is the new gatekeeper. If an author can make it there, the publishers will come knocking. But the question is, if you’ve done all the work yourself, what can a publisher offer you that you don’t already have? Hmm…
