Aya DeAniege wrote for years, first to please herself then writing stories for free—believing no one would ever pay to read her stuff—before pursuing indie publishing. She still writes mainly for personal pleasure, with topics ranging from romance, fantasy, science fiction, on to whatever takes her fancy in the future. World creation fascinates her, and when she finds one she likes, she dabbles endlessly.
What inspires you to write?
Errant thoughts, paired with ‘what if?’s mainly. What if I played with vampires? Sometimes when I’m stuck on a story, I’ll walk away and try to avoid writing or thinking about it all together.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process has been evolving. I once only wrote on the fly. Now I’ve begun to do outlining and sketches. I have sticky notes attached to my monitor and reminders on my cell phone. The book will be completely outlined in my notebooks.
During the writing process I end up ignoring the outline at some point, but then coming back after a tangent and continuing on.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Sometimes I talk, sometimes I throw things at them. Most of the time they don’t listen to me. Those are the best stories to tell, I find.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep on writing. Try not to get overwhelmed by what needs to be done to be successful, and always keep on writing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’ve always written, and even shared some of my stories with others in the past. I wanted to reach a wider audience and share with more people, so I began to research indie publishing so that I could retain full control over my books and worlds.
I would advise new authors to do their own research on their given genres and the publishers for those genres. Get all the facts before making a decision. Don’t do it by the seat of your pants.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think indie publishing will continue on, but I don’t think the printed book will ever fail. There’s something about having a book in your hands and the smell of the paper that an ebook can never replace.
