About Arsenio Franklin:
Arsenio Franklin is a depressed househusband. After being diagnosed with major depressive disorder in 2016, he abandoned his public relations career to pursue his passion for writing. He started running around the same time, which is what he’s usually doing when not writing. He currently lives in Gallatin, TN with his wife, Laura.
What inspires you to write?
It sounds grand, but I see writing as my contribution to the world. I want to make people feel the way I feel when I read a good book.
Tell us about your writing process.
I use bullet points when I write. Depending on what kind of day it is I may have choppy sentences or several paragraphs. Throughout the day I'll write things on post-it notes or save ideas to my voice recorder.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I mainly listen to my characters. I never want to force anything on them. At night is when I talk to them. I'll lie in bed and have mock conversations to get a feel for what they'd do or say in a certain situation.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write. The best thing I can do when I'm stuck is to write. It may be crap I'll never use or it may lead me to the next scene. Either way, it's helpful.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published my first book, Unholy Revelations. It had been in my head since college and I just wanted to get it out there when I finally wrote it. It was also shorter than a novel.
I'm currently writing a novel while waiting to hear from several publishers I've submitted another novel to. I have no problem self-publishing, but it'd be nice to just focus on writing.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
You can already be successful by self-publishing. You may not become a celebrity but you can make a living. For me, I'll continue to self-publish while submitting my work to publishers. We have all the tools to do it ourselves.
