About April Lynn Newell:
I have been writing ever since I can remember. However, it was my fourth grade teacher who gave me the encouragement I needed to believe in myself as a writer.
From that point on, I was a writer.
Journalism, poetry, fiction. I love it all and have done it all. I am excited to begin my career as a novelist with The Reconciling: Part I of the Overcome Trilogy.
I am a proud resident of Texas and live in the burbs with my husband, John, and daughter, Emalyn. I can’t get enough of pizza and hummus (though not necessarily together) … (though why not now that I think about it). I like nature walks, reading and binge watching TV shows. I owe all to my Jesus and love serving Him through my passions and talents.
What inspires you to write?
Instrumental music is so inspiring while writing. BUT what inspires me to write in the first place? Nature and LIFE itself. Experiences, testimonies from other people, the wind in the trees, rain on pavement, clouds shaped like ships. It’s an inspiring world in which we live.
Tell us about your writing process.
My beginning stages are all about DETAILS. First I define my characters, I write out everything about them from physical description to answer interview questions much like these! Then, I pin point the climaxes of my story – the high and low points, surprise turns, etc. Next, I summarize each chapter and/or scene of the entire novel. Last, and finally, I put it all together and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I like to imagine my characters in different situations, even situations I find myself in and figure out how they would respond or react. Putting them in my shoes helps me get to know them even better! So I guess…in a way I talk to them.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just do it. The first sentence is always the most terrifying to me. Just write it. Get it all down and feel the relief and excitement of finishing your book. Then, edit, edit, edit…and edit some more!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish because I wanted as much freedom to allow my series to go the way it needs to go. I don’t want to be concerned with what will sell, I just want to write the story I’m meant to share.
I asked a lot of questions of self-published authors, and did a whole lot of research. In the end, self-publishing and becoming an indie author was the right route for me.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m excited! I know there are many cons to anyone and everyone being able to publish their own books. BUT I’m excited that so many writers’ works are available to us now. I think there’s a freedom in that and my hope is that self-publishing will become more and more high quality. Not managed by any means, but that we indie authors would take the time and effort to perfect our craft and use all the wonderful resources at our disposal.
