Author Bio:
Andy Peloquin is a fantasy lover turned author, and he writes the stories he would love to read.
Growing up as a third-culture kid gave him a broader insight into the world around him, an insight he tries to weave into his books. When not writing he enjoys family, practicing martial arts, reading comics, reading, playing the guitar, and blogging on his website: http://www.andypeloquin.com.
He debuted his first novel — In the Days: A Tale of the Forgotten Continent — in 2014, and plans on writing many, many more.
What inspires you to write?
I love being creative, putting new things out into the world that no one else has ever conceived of. I like to be unique and stand out from the rest, and my art–the written word–is my way of doing so.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am definitely an outliner, but I don’t limit myself to coming up with an outline before I write.
I will usually get an idea for a project while playing a video game, running on the treadmill, watching TV, or drifting off to sleep (the time I get my best ideas). I will add that idea into a Word file I have on my computer, where it will sit with all of the others my brain has spawned.
My brain will sometimes continue to pick away at that idea, turning it into a full fledged concept. More and more ideas come to me, and before I know it, I have the rough outline of a story.
From there, it’s just about thinking more on the concept and fleshing it out. Once I know where it’s leading me, I begin writing and the journey commences.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I talk. I tend to mouth the words as I write them, as it helps me to imagine what they sound like as they come out of the characters’ mouths. Makes them more realistic.
What advice would you give other writers?
Know what you want to write, and write it. Make sure you have written everything you need to, and hand that baby off to an editor to slice and dice. Don’t be sensitive when someone criticizes your work, as it’s something that they noticed about it that isn’t up to snuff. Be ready for bad reviews.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I read an amazing ebook by a man named David Gaughan, which basically walks you through the steps of self-publishing your book.
Here is the link: http://davidgaughran.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/lets-get-digital-by-david-gaughran-free-pdf-edition.pdf
I also received advice from a good friend and creative consultant, Bethany Kelley. She said that self-publishing was the way to go, so I tried it.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m hoping that more good works are published, and that there’s a way to weed the corn from the c***.
