What inspires you to write?
Originally what inspired me to write was reading a novel that was a hard slog. Now, it would be the challenge to write something that not only makes me cry, scream, cheer and laugh but also the reader.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Stephen King, George R R Martin, J K Rowling, Thomas Harris,Suzanne Collins. I loved to get whisked away into another world. The best books were the ones I couldn't put down. There really is something special about keeping the reader guessing.
Tell us about your writing process.
My first book A Day in the Life (Novella) Book One was written unplanned. It just came and I found out what happened just as the reader did. It was both unnerving and exciting. For my first book it worked. I wrote two novels after using the same process and they had issues. They both took a year to write and I haven't released them. The fourth book (The second book in my apocalyptic series called The Day After) I planned and outlined each chapter. I wrote it in a month and it was good. So, now I plan. I have ideas for who the characters are in my head. I tend to know them and their speech patterns.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don't listen to or talk to my characters. I AM my characters. They are working me through the story.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be yourself. There's only one of you use it to your advantage. Why try and write like someone else? That person already exists and has written possibly great things. Take a risk and be original. The best things are. I love my book series because no one else has created this type of world before.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My first book was published through a publisher. They wanted the second book also. I got my rights back and I'm now self publishing. Haven't looked back. Unless your working with a big publisher who believes in your book you will be basically doing all the marketing yourself anyway. Self Publish baby, learn the business. But, first off, write a great book. Rule number one.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It's changing. Just like the world. Self publishing is becoming more and more popular with authors doing very well. I've come from the music world also where that has totally broken down. It's amazing coming to the book world and also seeing how creatives earn the smallest amount of money. probably 1-5% of each book sold. Creatives in this world are slaves to a money making machine of promoters, marketers, printers, distributors and wholesalers who are all earning a living from your hard work. Yet, you earn the smallest amount possible. Just like the music world, its broken.
