About Amelia Elliot:
I'm an author, trial lawyer, business owner, and copywriter. ‘Amelia Elliot’ is my pen name for my works in women’s literary fiction and romance. I also publishes on topics of law, business, and politics.
I live and write from a sailboat with my husband and three big dogs. It's very crowded.
I'm also disabled with chronic illness. I read and write romances because they help me stay optimistic through pain and exhaustion. I hope that my books help struggling people find solace. Because my stories will always have a happily ever after!
What inspires you to write?
I'm interested in life. Reading and writing stories is a way to explore life. I'm inspired by the struggles we all face, the complexity of the world, and humanity's many flaws, beauty, and strangeness. Writing is a way for me to explore things I'm curious about.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I was a literature major in college, and my favorite authors reflect that. I love William Faulkner and Charles Dickens. My favorite book is Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.
In the romance genre, my favorite authors are Jude Deveraux and Melanie Harlow.
Tell us about your writing process.
I used to be a plotter. But by my third novel, I became a pantser. My characters took over, and I let them. I do keep a timeline and character notes so that I don't make consistency mistakes, particularly between multiple books in a series. I use Scrivener and I love it.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I have narcolepsy, and one of the aspects of that condition is that you slip into REM suddenly throughout the day. I was already lucid dreaming; but now I see my characters. They do things like in a movie, and I watch. I don't talk to them, but I listen to them. Sometimes they behave in ways that I don't expect, and I find that absolutely wild.
What advice would you give other writers?
Use professionals to help you out. You should have a professional book cover and a professional editor so that your final product is up to consumers' standards. In addition, selling books is a bewildering journey requiring entirely different skills. Use a good coach and a blurb copywriter.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I always wanted to self-publish. I never considered looking for a publisher; I didn't have the patience to query. I'd rather put that effort into selling my books, and I like to move fast.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Traditional publishers are going to continue struggling, and Amazon will have a stranglehold on the publishing industry for a while. I think this is a mixed bag.
