What inspires you to write?
I get story ideas from everything around me. Sometimes I watch a TV show or read a book, and inspiration strikes. The characters keep talking to me in my head, and I can’t think about anything else until I at least write down a basic plot. Ideas often come to me when I’m sleeping, so I keep a notebook in the nightstand, which I’ve put to good use at all hours of the night. My dreams are usually pretty vivid and wild, and it’s a lot of fun twisting a dream into a story.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm a plotter, for sure! I try to write everyday, and I feel off-kilter if something prevents me from working. Even if I can’t get to the PC to write, I’m always plotting my current or future story in my head.
I have seventeen books out so far, another book is currently in edits, and there are several more manuscripts collecting digital dust on my computer. I don’t have children—so no distractions there—but my cats are demanding little creatures. My husband, Gregory, is the cook in the household, so luckily, I don’t have to worry about fixing my meals. Otherwise, I’d probably go hungry. Anyway, I just keep writing, usually with a cat on my lap who’s trying to sit on my hands.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Oh, yes! Sometimes the characters take over and derail my plan, so I have to whip them back into gear and make them follow the plot I’ve established. Usually, though, I give in to their demands and write what they want. Otherwise, I don't get any sleep.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just keep trying even when you’re feeling bad about yourself and the quality of your work. No one is perfect. Don’t rush a project; give it the love and attention it needs to be the best it can be. You as the writer, the book itself, and the readers deserve it.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I'm a hybrid author, but lately, I feel the self-publishing route is the better way to go. I have more freedom to market and price my books as I wish and set my own deadline. My royalties are higher, too. That said, the extra work that goes into self-publishing is sometimes daunting.
Going trad or self-pubbing is a tough choice for any author to make. Basically, they really need to ask themselves what they want and then list out the pros and cons.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The industry has changed so much over the years. Twenty plus years ago, there were only big presses that published books in mainstream genres. Nowadays with small and indie presses and with self-publishing, there are so many sub-genres widely available to a growing public. While variety is a good thing, quality in writing, grammar, and style has dropped since it’s easier to get published now than it was back then. Also, ebooks are the new vogue, and print books are on the out. Since ebooks are easier and cheaper to create and reproduce, there are countless more books in the market than ever before.
What genres do you write?: Romantic Suspense/Contemporary Romance
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
