About Amanda Balfour:
I write under the pseudonym of Amanda Balfour. I was born in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina. I met my husband, a Canadian, while skiing in Montana. We have lived in many different locations across the United States and Canada. We finally settled in West Virginia with our West Highland Terrier.
I have always enjoyed history and reading all genres. Until recently I was employed by a major bank in its IT department as a network analyst. I am enjoying having enough time to do research and work on my stories. I now have two books published, Rumors among the Heather and The Call of the Raven.
What inspires you to write?
I have always enjoyed reading history. In reading the stories, I have often wondered how the people lived and how their lives were so different from ours. I decided to put those stories from my imagination on paper and thankfully someone decided to publish my books.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually start with a general outline of how I want to get from point A to point B. I then write character sketches. After this process, I start writing and let my imagination take over.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to the characters. I try to see each situation from the character’s point of view and react as the character would.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write, Write, Write. From each story you write whether good or bad, you learn and the more you learn the easier the process.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to seek out a publisher. I wanted my stories to be the best they could be. I think a publisher gives you the best chance. They know the ins and outs of publishing and they can give you good pointers.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I definitely see ebooks taking a larger share of the market and more self-publishers joining the market. I hope we never stop publishing printed books. I love the feel of a book in my hand and being able to store it on my shelf and pick it up any time I want to read it again.
