About AJ Harmon:
AJ Harmon discovered her passion for writing contemporary romance novels after her children had left the nest. Born in Australia to English parents, her first loves were Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. As an adult, she still enjoys the classics but a contemporary romance novel is what she loves best. Her list of favorite authors is extensive and loves nothing more than to curl up with a great love story.
Living in Oregon with her husband and dog, her days are now spent writing the genre she loves to read and traveling around the country to signing events where she gets to meet and interact with her readers.
Irresistible Indulgence is the first story in the “Irresistible” series of standalone fantasy erotic novellas. Watch for book 2 coming soon.
AJ’s USA TODAY bestselling series, First Class Novels, is now in a boxed set, First Class Family, for readers to enjoy. Sky Romance Novels will have its’ third book in the series released in 2015, Chicago – a shot to the heart changes everything. A Choice for Claire, her 13th full length novel, and a stand-alone, will have three sequels, all stand-alones, planned for the very near future.
What inspires you to write?
I love to write what I love to read. I can be anywhere and have an idea pop into my mind, that usually takes priority for the next few days, not allowing me to concentrate on anything else. Once the characters are convinced I know their story inside and out, they let me get back to what I was doing before and usually patiently wait their turn for me to get to telling their story. At any given time I will be writing one story while thinking about ten others!
Tell us about your writing process.
I do not outline a story. I have the complete story thought out and then I sit down and do nothing else until the story is completely written (usually 3-4 weeks of intense writing) then I begin the editing process. Because of this process, I usually need a few weeks off in between each book to recover and catch up on sleep!.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I am constantly dreaming about my characters and often talk to them while I am writing. They each have a unique voice and demand that they’re story be told they way they want it! 😉
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing every day! It’s a good habit to get into when you are starting out so that it becomes second nature,
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My husband is a small business marketing strategist so it just seemed like a perfect fit for me to self-publish. But not all authors are as lucky as I am. I know several authors who have given up because they were rejected by a publisher and think it’s too hard to do it on their own. IT ISN’T!! There is lots of help available so find an author you admire and reach out for some advice.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the traditional way of publishing is being pushed out. There are so many good writers with a voice that should be heard and self-publishing is becoming more mainstream. It is exciting to see the number of books being published every day and I love finding favorite new reads.
