About Abigail Manning:
Abigail Manning is a wife, nanny, and author of YA romance. She resides with her husband, Marcus, in the beautiful state of Tennessee. In school, she studied both Early Childhood Development and Theatre Arts, both of which aided in the development of her Emerald Realm series, based off of retold fairy tales. Abigail has always adored working with young children and drawing inspiration from their creativity. Her stories are geared towards young adults, but inspired off of children's tales. She greatly enjoys the challenge of reinventing stories that most readers grew up with. She has only recently begun her career in writing, but already has growing ambitions revolving around her blossoming stories.
What inspires you to write?
I love taking some old and turning it into something new. I currently write fairy tale retellings and have always been inspired by the classic tales that I grew up reading. I think my inspiration comes from determining what I can do to update these stories and make them enjoyable for another generation.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I love Kenley Davidson, Melanie Cellier, and am currently really enjoying Camille Peter's work! I also have a few good writing friends who's work I really enjoy like Naomi Vickruck and Cora May.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a very loose plotter. I will start with a general concept and write out an entire story summary on my phone. From there I'll break the story down into chapters and write a brief summary of what should occur in each chapter. Then from there I just write! If a chapter feels too long then I'll split it into two and if it's too short then I'll pair it with another. A for characters I play around with pinterest a lot to find ideas on how I want them to dress and look, their personalities come naturally since they're inspired off of pre-exisiting characters
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I laugh at them a lot, especially my more quirky ones. I often find myself making weird faces at my computer because I"m trying to mimic the reaction a character would have so I can describe it better.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just go for it and take it one step at a time! The writing part is often the easiest, though it's not easy either… So don't look at it like a sprint, but a marathon. Each small success should be immensely celebrated and don't compare yourself to others. We all work at our own pace and should be so proud of every milestone!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I am self-published and I chose this route for quite a few reasons. For starters, I enjoy having freedom over my own material and being able to personally select my editor and cover designer. I'm still learning the best ways to market, but it's been a task that I have grown a lot from while learning.
There is no right or wrong way to publish, and I do intend on exploring traditional publishing at some point, but for now I enjoy working on my own schedule and freely creating my work.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that self-publishing is going to continue to explode. Since social media makes it far easier to market and establish an audience, I feel like more authors are going to try giving self-publishing a shot! But I guess we'll have to wait and see!
