What inspires you to write?
Life inspires me to write – news reports, family tragedies, challenges that happen to my coworkers… and dreams! Several of my books were born of dreams, as hokey as that may sound! ;o)
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually start out with a loose collection of ideas. Setting, main characters, main “problem” they will solve, and I’ve already pictured several big scenes in my head. But most of the stories come alive when my fingers touch the keyboard, and the characters seem to take over! This is all done in the very early dark hours of the morning!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
They talk to me – and I must listen, or they won’t cooperate!
What advice would you give other writers?
I’ve learned to write for me, not for pleasing the general public. You can’t make the whole world happy with your books. Most people LOVE my writing, and some HATE it! It took quite a while for me to develop a very thick skin, and just to go with my instincts!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I went with a traditional publisher for the first fifteen books, then branched out on my own for the last nine titles. Both ways are very satisfying.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think print books will be here to stay, but on a much smaller level. EBooks will grow rapidly, and I think the largest growth will be in audiobooks, because people don’t have time to read, and with audiobooks, you can read while you drive, do dishes, walk, or fold laundry!
