About A. K. Frailey:
As an author and teacher with a degree in Elementary Education, Ann Frailey has written and published ten books, and several of her articles have been published in national magazines. In 2016, she earned a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing for Entertainment from Full Sail University and won two course director’s awards.
Ann home schools and manages a rural home with her children and their numerous critters. She currently is working on science fiction & historical fiction short stories, literary stories, a new science fiction novel, and a science fiction miniseries screenplay.
What inspires you to write?
I enjoy reflecting what I see in humanity around me. Though we suffer through various failings and trials, yet human beings have indomitable courage in the face of adversity. I am inspired by that reality.
Tell us about your writing process.
I try to write every day, afternoons are best, except Sunday. I usually have a fairly good idea where my story and novels are going, but I don't strangle the characters with a detailed outline. They have to speak for themselves. And they do. Oh, they do.
I have various character background stories on my blog, which really help me get to know who they are, where they come from, and what emotional forces drive their actions.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters live in my mind pretty much all the time. Sometimes one might take a vacation. But that only leaves room for someone else to come along and beguile me with his or her charm.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing. Learn from masters. Revise and rewrite. Don't give up.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
At first, I dreamed of getting an agent and a publisher and working with that set of professionals. Never happened. Now, I am grateful for the freedom I experience as a self-published author. I know the entire process so much more intimately. I work with independent professionals, editors, beta readers, proofreaders, book designers, media consultants and more. I can change, improvise, and improve my work at every level.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
In recent years, I have noticed a shift from paperback sales to ebook sales to page sales through Amazon's lending program. I don't know how this will influence writing and publishing, but it is interesting to see that I no longer focus on how many people buy my work, but rather, on how many people are reading my work. In the long run, I suspect this will be a good thing. The writing itself will have the last word.
